Because then you were entering an unforgiving universe so vast that 'you' were fighting in it, while today the unforgiving universe is seen in a distant, sterile way, with so much grey tone pushed all over the Imperium's action.
They are no longer seen as desperate attempts to push back the darkness, but at gross imocmpetence and uncaringness, almost to comical levels. The fact that the powers that are do what they do could be such, but in the vast majority of cases, it is because it is the only choice at the moment.
Again, the lack of religious knowledge in the new authors makes it quite hard to get the same feel as the idea to be subservent to a higher being or power is seens as a negative nowadays.
Ignorance of the setting itself is also another factor, if you only have a couple of novels and memes and never reading any of the TT books, you're not getting far into what's what.
