I remember when they released pic related to promote the movie. I thought it looked weird how the kid was sitting like that in an empty photo studio. That imagery made me think of metrosexual male models and casting couches instead of space adventures.
I didn't know at the time that the movie had a gay director. Now that I know, and with these rumors >>149223085
it's just even more awkward.
If those rumors are true, I can see why they made the changes. In the current zeitgeist, a gay guy making a movie about a gay boy would trigger allegations about grooming. Since Disney and Pixar try to maintain a family-friendly brand, a controversy like that would hurt their ticket sales.

I guess it didn't help in the end, though. I wonder how much of the movie's failure is because people have grown wary of identity politics themes in Disney movies and expected this movie to feature that stuff, and how much of it was other reasons such as marketing etc.
