I don't think it's trying to be smart. Tsurumaki never tries to be smart, nor does he pretend to be smart. He's a nerd who runs entirely on emotion. And all this show tries to do is to make zoomers watch the original Gundam. That was the mission statement. GQX is dumb, nonsensical, and chaotic, so if you want any of it to make sense, you just gotta go through the watch order Tsurumaki provides you with through all his references (that also includes idols for some reason?). And when you think about it, it makes sense. This is exactly what FLCL was. The major difference here is that, if you read into FLCL and understand what it was trying to do, you will find great appreciation for it beyond the stylish facade. But GQX has nothing beyond its facade of Gundam references. The story is both obvious and weak, so you don't even have the joy of understanding it, you get it fine enough on the first watch, and it ain't good.
