There's another reason: GPUs today shit themselves with transparency.
That's why all hair, fog, god beams and things like that look like shit in remasters and remakes. In the original it's most likely a PNG with alpha channel, which old consoles rendered without much problem (in fact, they were designed around that).
Current GPU chug like an expresso machine when trying to render transparency, even more if things overlap. They're just not designed for that.
See my image from MGS2? The reflections are made just by having a semitransparent wall and two camera models opposed. No memetracing and no other shit.
And on a CRT it looks better than a modern game will ever do.
We have computers that are 1000x more powerful than that yet fail to get such effects in a convincing way because they just try to bruteforce it
