They do random flavor things like this all the time. It is functionally the same as "other creature" in preventing infinite, but it gives random interaction in mirror match or when opponents play specific decks. The flavor doesn't always work, but if it doesn't it's just part of the silly card game business. Nothing nearly as silly as Mutate for instance.

Changes in art direction take time. But feel free to find counter-examples to my claim. It is extremely hard to find art where a clearly female humanoid is getting killed/wounded/restrained. Examples of male characters being killed/wounded/restrained in modern MTG art are plentiful.
