We actually have to kinda blame Rare because they willingly agreed to Miyamoto's offer because they didn't have enough faith in Dinosaur Planet as its own thing so late into the N64 lifespan with the GCN on the horizon. Straight from the director's mouth

It's very fitting to post this in a Diddy Kong Racing thread because Lee also directed this game and it too similarly had a Nintendo character shoehorned onto what was originally Timber's game at the last minute to make it sell better. The interview makes it obvious he and Rare likely wanted to make the same lightning strike twice with the DP->SFA change.

It was Rare, it was always Rare, all Miyamoto didi was give them an offer to combine what they had with Dinosaur Planet with the Star Fox adventure game concept they already had cooking over in Kyoto.

>None of it had anything to do with Dinosaur Planet. That was way before the negotiations started, and besides, the Rare-Nintendo relationship didn’t work in such a way that they’d just force the SFA switch on us.
As Lee Schuneman explained in one of the links above, Rare didn't have enough confidence in Dinosaur Planet as a late stage original N64 IP with the GCN looming over the horizon as well as Rare also looking for potential buyers, they knew something had to change and that is why they jumped onto the Star Fox deal. It's sad but that's what happened.
The sad thing is I guess in the end it wouldn't of mattered because Dinosaur Planet, even if it would have been better than SFA, ironically probably would have faded into obscurity far faster than it did as a Star Fox game and just be yet another legacy IP for Microsoft to sit on and do nothing with.

>And Dinosaur Planet should’ve remained as is even if Miyamoto was too stubborn about forcing Star Fox on it
It was Rare, anon. It was always Rare's fault that DP got bastardized into SFA. Key staff like Kevin Bayliss and the game's director Lee Schuneman have always said as such.

I'm sad DP wasn't allowed to come together on N64 but the change was never forced upon Rare, Miyamoto just gave them an offer to combine it and his own action adventure SF concept he had brewing in Kyoto already and they said "sure, why not".
