The league saved itself by letting the teams actually play instead of predetermining the outcome like everyone was convinced they were going to do. Which doesn't seem like the sort of thing they should be praised for but in this day and age actually acknowledging fan feedback is increasingly rare.
If Adam ((Silver)) ran the NFL Mahomes would have got 5 RTP calls and 10 first downs by penalty and every single person who watched the game would have been disgusted and convinced it was rigged and the ratings would drop. Instead the NFL noticed that literally every non-Chiefs fan in America despised this team and decided not to ruin the sport just to manufacture a fraudulent superteam. Common sense won out for once. It's an uncommon thing these days

Not even joking, the difference between the 2 leagues is that the NFL recognized everyone hated it so they stopped doing it and everyone told the NBA they hated it and the NBA was like "we will never, ever not manufacture the outcome stop noticing things" There's a reason why the NFL brutally mogs the NBA in every metric

The owners accept the terrible contact paradigm because they don't have the balls to lock the players out again and insist on radical change during CBA negotiations. Since streaming services are willing to just light money on fire the terrible ratings and declining popularity aren't going to force the issue just yet.
They'd rather be held hostage by their employees than slow down the the gravy train, so every owner getting fucked by luxury tax or cursed with an albatross contract has only themselves to blame. The fact that it's just bad for teams and fans in general is irrelevant, the league has never given one fuck about quality of play
