There's only so many times you can have stuff like meniscus surgery. There's also the specter of history which shows bigs with these kinds of injuries do not age well and often hit a wall when they reach 30

Tatum is a situation where yes he's had a devastating injury but it's a one off case and there does appear to be significant improvement in its treatment nowadays and he's still fairly young. We've seen guys recover more lately and not look that much worse as long as they don't get other related injuries. I wouldn't rate him before seeing him afterwards but you can somewhat understand the optimism

As far as medical advances go it's a different comparisons. It's like how the acl tear used to literally by a career ender but now guys are bouncing right back at near the same level. Achilies tears seem to now be trending the same way, though I wouldn't put it on that level yet but we will see how this latest group does. Even with those advancements getting multiple of similar injuries does seem to have a noticeable impact and it obviously gets worse as you get older. 1 acl tear is fine but multiple and you start seeing real losses like with Jabari Parker or have to look at for other compensation injuries like with DRose. Embiid is sort of in that latter range and the nature of his knee injury (meniscus) and how they treat it in surgery is not something that works out long term because there's only so much you can shave/cleanup so multiple procedures are a giant red flag
