I like the first Donner movie too, but that series was mid at best by the end. That film was a firework, a bright light that left a memorable impression. The DCAU from STAS to JLU was more like a warm, comfy self sustaining campfire. Not reaching the same heights, but also not the same lows.
If anything the Donner movie was the precursor to something like The Dark Knight, because it tries to have the world outside of the colorful heroes and villains be as mundane and "realistic" as possible. The one thing this new one has over it is a setting that feels comic-booky, where crazy sci fi things just happen and no one bats an eye. But animation is just flat out superior compared to live action for adapting capeshit. Like David Mazzuchelli said in that afterword to Batman Year One, superheroes are real when they're in ink.
