On this day, 44 years ago, Nintendo badly needed a hit game. They had a thousand Radar Scope cabinets that weren’t selling and so needed to be converted into something else. Donkey Kong. The first bona fide platformer, and yadda yadda yadda, you all know this shit. Let’s celebrate DK and his arcade games. How many of you have actually played Donkey Kong 3? The one that tried to combine a platformer with a space shooter with the way bugs flew down? Feels a little more basic than the previous two, but kudos for Miyamoto’s team attempting to build on both two genres at once, even if they didn’t quite gel together. Do you think there’s still potential in such a hybrid?
