I've always hated ethereal shift and think it's fundamentally an unfun item. Sitting around waiting for someone to come out of an invicibility state is fucking lame. When the huge smurf enemy shiv is using it it's even worse. If an item just makes you totally uninteractive for a period of time it better have some payoff, like it's a self destruct sequence or some shit. SOMETHING. And shiv has always had a dogshit design gameplay-wise, I don't know why he hasn't been totally reworked. He's a lumbering tank who just shoots you a bunch until he can click the button to instakill from range. At least Calico dashes around and has combos and shit.
