The land of Bradbury is set by monsters called the Mist, while the heroic knight Silvarius fights the beasts back to protect the people. Beloved by the masses, Silvarius realises to his horror one day that he's actually succeeded in killing all of the Mist - terrified that he will no longer be loved and famous, Silvarius finds a way to create more Mist that he can 'heroically' defeat. The grudges of the people who die unnecessarily for Silvarius' glory-seeking eventually accumulate into a spirit of vengeance called the Miasma King that hunts corrupt authorities, but Silvarius sees an opportunity. He founds an organisation to protect Bradbury called the Lighters, then fades into the background. Every generation, the leadership of the Lighters end up going corrupt, which leads to them being killed by the Miasma King, at which point Silvarius swoops in and defeats the monster so it can revive again years later. In the latest generation, a boy named Llew who's witnessed the corruption in society becomes one of the souls in the Miasma King, but instead of letting himself be consumed by vengeance, he urges his fellow dead to fight out of hope and love for the people of Bradbury. Llew assumes control of the Miasma King from within, and defeats Silvarius. The other spirits in the Miasma King finally move on, while Llew remains part of the monster and is abducted to take part in the Feast. From an old folk song recounting Bradbury's history, he takes the new name of Diawl.

All the generic NPCs suddenly getting faces after Llew asserts the townsfolk aren't just background characters but people with hopes and dreams of their own was a nice meta touch.
