Why do you feel a need to argue this? Mount/pet collecting is a gameplay loop in pretty much all MMOs, as was completing all of the quests (people were like this before achievements). The only thing that genuinely changed was transmog, which I think was a net negative for the game overall.

Getting the Westfall Chicken as horde was seen as an achievement, even moreso the White Kitten sold by Timmy in Stormwind. Go watch the Cheat! episode and see how it TALKS ABOUT MOUNTS AND PETS. People cared about this shit in 2005, but you wouldn't know because you didn't play back then.
