My headcanon is that when Ingen made the Rebirth Spinosaurs, that they thought they were failures because they didn´t fit the look that Spinosaurus had at the time in the 1980´s. They assumed it looked like an oversized Baryonix with a sail. So when they were "fixing" the Spinosaurus, they created an hybrid by accident (or on purpose).

It would explain why the JP-III Spino could do things that no other 'normal' Spinosaurus couldn't.

I am fully in the Spinosaurus could swim-really-well camp. If you want Heron type Spinosaurids, look no further than Suchomimus and Baryonix who did not have paddle tails nor thermal regulating sails.

>Was the swimming variant of the Spino supposed to be a mutant even though we know the Spino was adapted for water?
My headcanon is that when InGen made them for the first time, that they were considered failures because they didn't look like the Spinosaurus as depicted in contemporary science (A long snouted T-Rex with a sail). Remember, in universe, these were made in the 1980's. The Spinosaurus in JP-III was their attempt to "fix" the animal.

They did not. By sheer accident, they made the Spinosaurus even more potent, more chad then the real dino ever was.

When they made the first Spino's (JW Rebirth), Ingen probably thought that they made a mistake because the Spinosaurs didn't look like what contemporary science 'told' them how they should look like (T-Rex with a sail and long snout). The JW Rebirth Spino's are more accurate but didn't fit the preconceived notion of what the animal should look like and they "fixed" the genetic design and thus, the JP-III Spinosaurus was born.
