The car is a tool of personal freedom. It means you can go anywhere there's a street at any time you want.
A "walkable city" sounds nice but what this means ultimately that the car is gone. Need to go somewhere other than walking distance? Got to rely on public transport or Ubers/taxis.
Couple that with the push for electric vehicles that are controllable by default by the large corporations and thus governments you are looking at a way to strip millions of Americans from their freedom to travel.
We have also learned that anything anybody is trying to package as some positive change for people usually turns out to be some dystopian hellscape feature in actual practice.

A few years ago. It started to click that shortly after 2012 everything was just a bit harder and more frustrating than it really had to be.
Death by a thousand little cuts really.
In all aspects of life. And it seems weird to complain about such things but it's just so odd the amount of effort required in every little endeavour.
Nothing goes right. Nothing is every truly finished. Nothing seems to advance positively without some advance negatively setting everything back to 0.
That "nothing ever happens" seems to be the manifestation of a living hell...in reality a lot is happening but it just balances out to an ever present net 0 of gain and loss.
The end result being a crushing weight on the psyche and soul.
