The reason why he redeems himself so quickly is because he was already being humbled by the Dreemurr family fighting, divorce trauma, basically sharing all of Kris's abandonment issues and even his own situationship having gone [South of the Border].
Tenna is definitely manipulative and narcissistic, like he does genuinely awful things that shouldn't be looked past. But he also folds like paper and loses control of his employees when they all just decide to quit and he still copes that the show can keep going. So he's pitiable at the same time. At the end of the day his issues come from believing he was about to be thrown away and avoiding that at all cost, which is why Susie's reassurance turns him around so quickly. It's also why giving him away to Mettaton is the best outcome, because he can finally move on from the past and still perform his intended function.
