The fact that one of the most reoccuring enemy forces in the game and the very first one you fight is an anthropomorphic crocodile skeleton was also an obvious red flag in hindsight. The big monster variation made by Grumpy also clearly evokes K. Rool especially with the golden swirly goo at the top looking like a crown.
desu it's kinda surprising Nintendo with the twist nonetheless because it feels like something they wouldn't typically do, a twist that kinda relies on some sort of prior knowledge of previous games to get the most impact out of.

One thing that's pretty funny in hindsight is how prior to the leaks, certain folks dismissed the Crockoids as being potentially Kremlings in disguise simply because their names' didn't start with "K" in the typical Kremling tradition.
Now obviously on the surface level they didn't do that to not completely give away the twist right off the bat, but it's funny how this was never actually a factor for the Japanese version where Crockoids are called クロコイド (Kurokoido)...which means they actually do have the traditional Kremling name setup there as most Kremling characters Japanese names begin with "ク" as the letters "C" and "K" are typically represented with the K sound there, for example K. Rool's name is クルール (Kurūru) and Kritter's name is クリッター (Kurittā).
