>Should you play the original or remake?
The 2001 original ONLY.
The 2024 DEI-make is absolute cancer, with all the modern UE5 + TLOU-wannabe cancers packed into one, with some literal Sweet Baby Inc virtue signaling on top.

The pacing is absolutely butchered, with everything taking 4 times longer for no reason. The exploration and problem solving aspects were minimized, while action was cranked up - and it plays just like the notorious SH Homecoming. If that says nothing, it's essentially Dark Souls -lite, which absolutely does not fit a slow-burn, "sad lovestory" vibes of SH2. All the acting and character models are terrible as well.

No fan wanted that shit to be made. No OG Team-Silent dev wanted that shit to be made.

In short, SH2 remake is THE worst way to experience the Silent Hill 2. Even worse than the notorious HD Collection port from 2010.

Here's the SH PC Guide to help ya get the OG trilogy, for free:

PS: if you have never played a SH game before, START WITH SILENT HILL 1!
It's a far better game to start with, and unironically ups the SH2's experience as well.

THE very best Silent Hill title,
which instantly makes it the king of survival horror.
I still replay SH1 from time to time. Must've done dozens of playthroughs since 2000.

Anyway, SH thread?

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
DON'T use W10's own virtual disc app! It will not work.
Don't install under C:\Program Files\ ! This will cause issues.

For SH2, follow the instructions on the Enhanced Edition homepage to the T, and you should be fine.
The "Enhanced .EXE" is also the no-CD crack.

For SH3 & 4, check the Guide or PC Gaming Wiki.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
I recommend the DuckStation, which is modern and easy to use, but most emulators work OK as well.

>Protips
-Play in the release order.
-Start with Normal difficulty! Don't do hard on 1st run (espec. SH2).
-Replaying them all is recommended; tons of replay value.
-Turn down the ingame Brightness setting, for better gamma & colors!
-Don't try to kill everything that moves, especially outdoors. Leg it, or sneak!
-Turning OFF the flashlight can really help w/ stealth!

>You spend most of your time in any SH game dealing with combat
No son, only (You) do.
One of the "big things" in the SH games when they came out were the numerous ways you could AVOID combat, a form of simple "stealth" if you may (turning off flashlight, remaining quiet, or just legging it). It perfectly fit the RE-style survival horror games' replay speedrun tropes as well.

>They all have boss fights even.
That are the ONLY enemies you actually kinda have to engage with, and even many of them are "skippable" with pacifistic methods.
You'll be hard pressed to try and convince anyone that oldschool SH would be an action game.

>i just wish they would do a remaster collection like metal gear for the originals though
In case you have been living under a rock, they did release PC ports for 2-4 already two decades ago, and fans have long since fixed them to work great on modern PCs. All of them are in Abandonware state as well, if you're a Johnny Goodshoes and dislike "muh piracy".

Amnesia and Outlast are the LAST games to even consider using as any sort of influence. If you cannot pull a classic Y2K era RExSH gameplay in 2025+X, then don't bother making a "Silent Hill" game.
