FRIEND wants (You) to succeed here. The whole point of the side stuff is to get FREEDOM, which is probably what FRIEND wants too.
FRIEND is always a humble servant. He's some demon chained to service and wants to be freed. We're possibly going to give him that freedom and come to find out why he was supposed to stay in the Dark.

I don't think FRIEND is particularly in service to Kris.
I think FRIEND just exists to serve. He's bound to constantly serve others.
Originally it's Gaster. Then it becomes Dess/The Knight. And when it's giving a SMILE to Kris from the vending machine that's it's only service to Kris (also helping Kris by giving healing during the ERAM fight).

That's why it's tied to the Shadow Crystal stuff. It's all about FREEDOM and pushing ideas of achieving FREEDOM.
What else would a demon bound to serve forever want most? It probably is working with Dess on the idea that they could both go free from the Dark eventually.
