Speaking as a Sonic "fan", I find it difficult to interact with the fanbase because everyone is fucking retarded and it feels like I am speaking with people with a hilarious amount of tunnel vision and nostalgia. None of them have marathoned the games recently to have both an objective and subjective view. I have. On top of that, I keep seeing the same old shitty myths about the development of the games and about cut content being parroted over and over again.
Not helping matters is the sheer autism around non-canon material. I like Archie and SATAM, but the sheer fucking autism wars over Archie, IDW and SATAM is actually unbearable.
But what makes things iffy for me, is that people would rather spend time begging SEGA and Sonic Team (both notoriously unreliable) to implement non-canon shit into canon. When it would be much better to straight up make fan works given that SEGA/Sonic Team has given the green light for fanworks. Imagine all that autism that was spent in shitflinging and screeching being used to make a genuinely passionate fan project. There's an actual absence of fan projects that aren't classic stuff and it actually bugs me considering how vocal the rest are.
Even though I am not a classicfag, I do have to respect them for actually putting the work in making their dreams come to life. But modernfags, archiefags and even Xfags need to pick up the pace.

I feel this is mostly correct. Playing Shadow 05 with the Reloaded mod actually surprised me given just how surprisingly fun it was, coupled with the retranslation mod and JP dub fixing the iffy writing, and I actually had a surprising blast with it. Heroes was good, but it's engine problems are so fucked up that even with mods it's tricky to work around with.
Sonic 06 is straight up iredeemable, only Project 06 fixed the gameplay and made the visuals actually consistent and interesting, but the actual story is straight up mostly unsalvagable.
