Americans are celebrate independence day on the wrong date. This is because the United States has a policy of not recognising unilateral declarations of independence; in other words, the parent country has to consent to the independence of the new country. This means that, under American interpretation, America's own Declaration of Independence was illegal and non-binding. Therefore, under American interpretation, Independence Day should instead be celebrated on September 3 to commemorate the Treaty of Paris, whereby England officially recognised the independence of the United States.

There doesn't even need to be any sort of repentance in a moral or metaphysical sense. One of the themes of SnS is the absence of catharsis. Andrew beating the shit out of Ashley isn't the emotional climax it's meant to be, it's calm and introspective, there's no moment of tears afterward, just weak conciliation, the sex unsatisfying and devoid of romance. "Your crimes unpaid for" is to further drive home the absolute lack of finality, there is no resolution.
