It'd reinforce how avoiding tragedy is impossible. Andrew and Ashley both suffer by not getting what they want, but both cannot get what they want at the same time. Each wants the other's happiness, but each siblings idea of how the other must act for their personal happiness conflicts with the other siblings idea of how they should act for their own happiness, if that makes sense.
