playing this for the first time, should I use the guidebook for the heart pieces or just play the game blind on my own?

They're smarter than us.
I say that as someone who instantly reacted to the ending of Ocarina of Time by saying "wow" and calling it "a masterpiece". When I checked Metacritic for the first time, to find it was literally the greatest game of all time, that's when I realized children are truth-tellers.

>Dark Souls but with clunky controls, baby tier difficulty, and forced unskippable storyshit
There was really no point in pretending this was good after the very early 2000s

I've played every 3D Zelda game and can say they are utter dog shit.
They start strong but quickly become tedious boring shit once you reach 1st or 2nd dungeon.
Only Skyward Sword was somewhat competent but mediocre.
With BOTW and TOTK it took a huge nosedive and evolved backwards.

It's not a Zelda game. not a true one anyway.
The core of Zelda is the progressive unlocking of items that provide new mechanics, like in Metroidvania, but instead it's a "go-anywhere" open world that technically lets you go where you want, but eventually you can't cross either a bridge or a rock, because you lack the item that can get you over it mechanically.

This was present in Zelda 1 and it was also present in the OoT formula, despite the huge leap between those game formats. It's even present in Zelda 2, which is a side-scroller.

It is not present in BotW or TotK, and low-key lacking in A Link Between Worlds, because you get everything you need in the intro of the game, and thus the rest of the game lacks any kind of real surprise as it goes on.
