I am a 27 year-old man, and my girlfriend is 23. We have a pretty great relationship, and any sort of differences in attitude or culture we have because of the age difference (because believe it or not, 5 years can make a difference when culture moves as quickly as it does now) is more a point of amusement than conflict.
But the real frustration comes with dealing with her friends, who are all 20-22, and are the main people both of us hang out with. I feel like I am talking to actual lobotomites when I interact with these people. Their definition of “hanging out” is coming to our place, putting anime OPs and react content channels on the TV, and interrupting any conversation I try to start with “woah this is so cool” or some dumb video on their phones.
I’m not saying I’m above watching something at all hangout. When I was in college, my roommates and I would regularly riff over YTP or dumb movies. But it’s literally all these people want to do. Anytime my gf or I try to organize doing something (dinner, going to the movies, going to a concert, etc.), these people flake last second. They don’t even have a good reason, usually just “I’m too depressed ):” and they choose to sit at home watching short form content and playing shitty video games. Most of my older friends had to move for work, so we only get to hang out with my 30 year-old buddy (who’s awesome but is usually busy with work), or these borderline gen alpha types.
I don’t wanna be the boyfriend who tells his girl that her friends suck, so I really wanna know if these people are uniquely bad or if anyone that age just acts like this now.
