I did watch it but barely remember any of it.
The battle were actually "in 3D" but also lost the "historical feel" they had (except for the infamous double Canae battle which was made even more ridiculous than in the original) since most of the battle were based on real battles that happened IRL which is the reason why they almost all happened in "2D", like they were on a flat plane.
As for the Empire being bad guys, I don't really remember it so I can't say but the Lippstadt alliance were indeed shown as more evil than in the original anime.
