They artificially inflated 1st trailer view count by putting in on ad rolls. No one gave the slightest fuck about Marathon, and people were way too eager to label it as another Concord. nuBungie also had a terrible reputation by that point, so nobody gave them benefit of the doubt.
By the time when Marathon was officially revealed, Destiny 2 and its community were in a terrible shape, so much so, that people immediately went ballistic and pinned everything bad that happened to Destiny 2 on Marathon.

And it blew in their faces spectacularly. Destiny 2 players got so mad, they badmouthed nuBungie everywhere, and it spread far and wide, irreparably damaging their reputation and their future endeavors.
