so, like, i've been doing a lot of thinking lately—just sort of mulling things over while sipping my overpriced cup of fair-trade, ethically-sourced coffee, of course—and one of the many, many things that's been bouncing around in my head, like one of those rubber balls in a pinball machine, is this whole idea of how, and why, jews, like, just seem to naturally, effortlessly, maybe even genetically, i don’t know, make friends, like it’s some kind of innate, almost mystical ability passed down through the generations, like matrilineal lineage or something, but maybe even more mysterious, you know? and i don’t mean to overstate it or make it sound like some kind of superpower, although, honestly, in a world that feels increasingly fractured and lonely, maybe it kind of is, but there's just this deep, abiding sense of community, of shared trauma, shared rituals, shared memories that kind of glues everything together, like gefilte fish on a seder plate or something, and it just seems to create this almost automatic bond between jews, regardless of background or denomination or even personal taste in bagels—like, you either like them with or without salt, but you’re still at the same table, right?
