Then Isis said, ‘Tell me your Name, divine Father, for he who is called by his Name is he who shall live.’ Re cast round in his mind for a name that he could give her that would prove efficacious enough for her magic spells. He did not, of course, intend to give her his Great Name, his secret name. He played for time by listing his achievements, and then, with a great show of reluctance, revealed three of his names: ‘At dawn, I am called Khepri; at midday, Re; and in the evening, Atum.’ The wily Isis was not impressed. She waited implacably while the poison worked its way deeper and deeper into the body of the great god until he could no longer walk. Then she said, ‘You have not told me your Name. Tell me your Name so that the poison will go away. For he who is called by his Name is he who shall live.’
