you gotta kinda love the irony of it. this is 100% why you know if they ever got reparations they'd just blow it on spinning rims. this isn't without precedent, back in the 1950's the U.S. government was giving one-time payouts to indian tribes to finally settle some shit and, even then, they knew the likelihood of them blowing it on bullshit was so high they conducted a study on the best ways to get the money to the indians to help change their lives for the better in a permanent way. they offered 2 options: A lump sum and an annuity which paid out every year. Even when warned against it, most of the indians took the lump sum and spent it in a historically frivolous manner, going completely broke within a very short period of time (under 2 years) while the minority who took the yearly installments generally did very well and helped their families/tribes grow. but they were in the extreme minority.

It costs you money through taxes and a good intended idea gets completely sat on it's head, making people despise the concept all together. People shouldn't be able to get fat off foodstamps, foodstamps are for survival, not gluttony

depends where you live, a lot of stores just throw it out if it doesnt reach a certain aesthetic appeal. Which food banks are you talking about? I've been to a few when I was really down on my luck and they had a limited supply of items, food banks also don't care to be sued so they're not going to give you past expiration date items if there is a chance of you getting sick. I'm also in the opinion that dumpster diving should be legal but the dumpster diver takes all the risks and cannot sue for expired food or getting injuried. Still the difference you talk about is tax payer vs store who is incentivized to have shiny perfect produce
