They were never different races. The term Hylians didn't even pop up until Ocarina of Time and even then it's used specifically for the people of Castle Town. Before Ocarina, they just used terms like humans and man which they still used later in the series. I'll never understand why secondaries want Hylians to be some sort of mythical elven race so badly. They don't use magic and and their ears aren't even a genetic trait, even the Gerudo have been shown to get them. Ridiculous.
