They were never different races. The term Hylians didn't even pop up until Ocarina of Time and even then it's used specifically for the people of Castle Town. I think a lot of the unrealized character development and storylines in TP just had to do with pacing and game length. TP is already a pretty long Zelda title, so expanding any of the plotlines/characters would only extend it further. Development timelines were probably also a big factor. While I don't agree necessarily, I see why they prioritized Midna's character and didn't expand on a lot of the side characters, Ashei and members of the Resistance for example. Luckily the manga explores a lot that the game didn't

It should have been BotW but with a different gimmick, the same-sized world without any depths or sky. I think they used TotK to see if they could make a game like it without any lag, slowdown or whatnot. There's Linked Oracles and Minish Cap, which are all Fuji games, which makes them self-explanatory.

Okay, so that's like 6 or so that actually get acknowledged in-game. Fair amount, but still far from the majority. It's really hard to count the NES ones since they're so far removed from the rest of the franchise. Plus how many people actually fucking played and beat them? A Misery Mire knockoff just so I can add a swamp area to Hyrule, Zola/River Zora's Domain (no idea where I would put this), some kind of castle since Ganon's "Castle"/Tower didn't really scratch that itch, and some sort of hellish place in the dead center of the Gerudo Desert.
