Eh, I've never really cared for this. In a lot of media, the self-insert character is either too bland or too characterized for me to immerse myself. And even in truly faceless scenarios, the self-insert is portrayed as completely unproblematic. Everything just works out, regardless of how I'd truly react to a situation.

Speaking as a dude, the prevalence of showing genuine affection that's not caked in some kind of plausible deniability is still a problem in the West. Being labeled gay or effeminate because of how you display care or concern is damaging for a lot of young guys, and they don't have either the role models or emotional tools to reconcile with those hurt feelings.

I'm only one guy and far from an expert, but I've seen it enough that it's clear lots of people choose to jump the shark rather than open themselves to the idea that some people simply express their emotions differently.
