Is destiny real? As in what has happened was supposed to happen? Or is that just another coping mechanism?

Is life objectively bad, or is it our minds that ruin the experience by superimposing misery with bad brain chemicals?

I ask this out of a curiosity after looking at religions and spiritual guides saying things like "this life is just a test, the best is yet to come", as if we have to make a transition from this realm to another. But what if there isn't anything else but this? Shouldn't we try to be happy and have good lives now?
