What was was left of the Empire tore itself apart in civil war as soon as Palpatine died (the Rebel Alliance didn't even liberate Coruscant for another three years and found the place a war zone) so it's not really comparable to the Third Reich or the Confederate States, which remained mostly coherent as governments right up until they were dissolved.
