That's not a result of complex writing, that's just retarded illiterate fans. The "argument" is about things the characters in question have plainly stated but certain people just live in denial about it.

In Undertale, being your friend is Sans's one last thread of hope to escape the existential nightmare he's trapped in. Every single thing he does in Undertale is motivated by trying to be your friend, to make you happy, to help you have a good time, because appeasing you until you're satisfied is the only way he could think of to get something like you to just stop and let everyone live their lives.
