True freedom is a bullshit concept in a medium like a video game, when the tech isn't advanced enough that the medium can truly explore freedom in its fullest capabilities.
Everyone and everything, including the absolute powers and narrative-assigned creators of the world, like Gaster and Annoying Dog, are just following scripts and events predetermined and premediated for every possibility that Toby designed and allows to happen.
The game LITERALLY only exists to fulfill the fever dream ending Toby had over a decade ago, to a point where characters in the know, such as the schizo holders and Ralsei, are very well aware that their world is fated to either meet that ending, or one of the other premediated paths Toby has allowed to take place should you fulfill criteria.
This is why Gerson rejected the crystal's temptations, he already fuckin' knew this shit because he died, saw God (Toby), and God told him what was up before patting him on the back and prepping him for his rebound in Chapter 4.
It's all fake, stupid bullshit that's set in stone, but it wants you to at least care about the experience, to find it in your heart to hold sentimentality for it all.
The Weird Route, too, is a sense of sentimentality, to get the absolute most out of this experience. And unlike Undertale, it isn't going to "punish" you with "hehe i will make you wait 10 minutes before you can play the game again and also check a flag that says you're a naughty boy :3". Gaster, and by extension Toby, WANTS you to get freaky with it and have fun seeing everything his game has to offer.

The game we know as "Deltarune" is already done, it just hasn't been made yet. Every single person who worships this "game" seems to forget that we are playing fragments of a FULL game. Whatever "message" we see can't be interpreted properly because we only see what part of it exists in front of us. In the context of a full game, gathering all the darkeners would matter to some extent, or at least it SHOULD. What we know is that the game is insistent on "everything happening the same way", and for the most part, even in WR, it's still true, regardless of traumatizing Noelle and Kris.
All the superbosses can still be fought.
You can still recruit everyone.
You can still talk to everyone in town the same.
The bosses all end the same way.
You can access the hidden game on all routes.
The story still unfolds the same way.
The only thing that's changed is flavor text and what happens to some characters personally. There has yet to be a serious, major deviation in plot. Though obviously it has to mean something. But because we are given fragments, no one can reasonably examine anything, just shooting wild guesses.
The correct lens is that there is no lens, and to claim otherwise is foolish. That's why at the end of it all, I'm annoyed DR exists the way it does, and it will fade in legacy over time, no matter what anyone tells you. It'll always be "the sequel prequel to Undertale" and not "Deltarune".
To be frank, the game disgusts me.

You could piece together that Flowey is Asriel as early as Waterfall if you're smart enough to grasp context clues, especially with the literal flashback dialogue that directly precedes falling onto a patch of golden flowers.
Also, it's worth recognizing that Undertale was a complete package upon launch. Deltarune is releasing in chapters, so it HAS to offer context and clarity on information in advance, in order to build foundation and intrigue for where the game is going in the next chapters.
Chapter 1 didn't have any of that beyond "Kris can act WITHOUT THE SOUL!?!?!?!?!?! AND HE HAS A KNIFE!?!?!?!??!!?" and you saw what kind of "Deltarune is a post-genocide sequel to Undertale" lamer ass bullshit people came up with during the first few years.

I think that DR still has better boss themes over all though, and the overworld themes are objectively just overall superior.
