Two seem to be removed because they focus on events which a player may not encounter in their playthrough: Gerson training Susie and "snow falling from the sky." The weird route related panel especially may imply that the prophecy was at one point going to fluidly adjust to fit the player's choices. This feels heavily reminiscent of the unused Ralsei dialogue about the Soul in chapter 1, about how it can "determine fate." This seems to contrast with the shdaow crystal description in prophecy rooms demonstrating that the prophecy is unchanged through its lens.

It has a lot more battles, and the battle system is closer to a traditional JRPG. It is pretty nicely done and it's not frustrating.
The point is the story and the overall journey. The OST is kino, and the art is very nice too.
You have dream world segments where you go on dream adventures and real world segments where walk around town, do stuff, and meet people (definitely answer the door whenever you can).

Cute characters, weird settings, and zany humor seem to be the safest bets. Past that, it's clearly a lot of luck. A lot of Western successes in Japan make sense in hindsight, but can be unpredictable to gauge before that. If it was predictable, it would be easier to explain in detail what takes off in the Japanese market.
