It has a lot more battles, and the battle system is closer to a traditional JRPG. It is pretty nicely done and it's not frustrating.
The point is the story and the overall journey. The OST is kino, and the art is very nice too.

Cute characters, weird settings, and zany humor seem to be the safest bets. Past that, it's clearly a lot of luck. A lot of Western successes in Japan make sense in hindsight, but can be unpredictable to gauge before that.
