If the UNUSED text is Dess then it's not current, since the speaker is reacting as if they're in a new situation and Dess must have disappeared years ago. It doesn't change anything about Dess acting as The Knight now.

This is an extremely cryptic event that just hints that Kris has some unresolved trauma over whatever happened with Dess, can't really say anything more about it than that. Again I don't see how it changes anything about Dess being The Knight, other than being another layer to the Dess-Kris connection and by extension the Knight-Kris connection.
