I think Toriel doesn't have a right to judge Asgore. He clearly didn't want to hold the weight of going off and actively hunting down human souls to steal for breaking the barrier but she's guilty of the same thing.

So here's my lil schizo theory.
Timeloop theory is true, and if we don't get the true destiny-defying ending, we just end up being looped back to chapter 1. That's why every chapter has a "Skip the long dialogue heavy intro" option.
The eggs are key to getting the ending you actually want though. Once you get your first ending, all of them will morph into a key item that lets you skip to the end of whatever chapter you got it in (after the boss and ending dialogues).
So if all you needed was the Black Shard, then warp to the end of chapter 2 to move on to 3, then speed run through it.
All progress is preserved until you actually finish chapter 7, so you can go back and forth as much as you wish to get all recruits, boss fights, and items.

That's the best eggsplanation I have for the eggs. I think they'll be somewhat important given how hard they are to find, but not so important as to lock the good ending eggsclusively behind them. (also, there's one per chapter, which I'm guessing means something.)

It's how Toby makes the first chord of "The place where it rained" hit like a goddamn truck. It's why "Don't forget" at the end of each chapter makes you feel like you just read the best damn story of your life. Just try this challenge run next time you play the game. I call it the joyless run.
