You can always get a GI spec more loosely fit gun, but if you want something tightly fit you're either going to pay for it to be broken in by the factory on a machine or you'll do it yourself. I prefer knowing exactly how it was done.

It's not quite that, it's that you really do need to be somewhat picky about buying one and given the incredibly wide range of companies making 1911s that can be hard. So it starts with knowing what the differences are, what matters to you, and then dealing with whatever the implications of your choice are. And admittedly, in a lot of cases that means being willing to send it in for warranty service if it's not working correctly from the outset. QC is pretty shit on basically everything in the modern world, so it's offloaded to the buyer. You're better off buying from a company that's reputed to have good service.
