Entirely a comfort and quality thing mainly. Surprisingly enough, they are just barely a few bucks more per shirt than the low quality chinese ones, yet with good quality materials.
But if it's about fashion they are great to add extra layering, a base to build around.

Japanese work pants, if you look up tobi work pants you'll see japanese construction workers wearing them.
The ones I linked are from an small indie designer, he combined western with oriental by using heavy denim with japanese design, it's the small things that made me want it, for example the belt loops being lower to prevent roll over, the high rise so I can wear them on my natural waist, the loose/drapey feel it has, and the mobility, which I favour a lot since I do manual labour it's really comfortable to not be restriced.
