The thing that makes the rule good is that it's more lenient than mainstream modern day takes. A 30 year old can date a 22 year old, 34 can be with a 24, 27 with a 20. It's not perfect, but as a starting point it's refreshingly sensible and lenient. "Age doesn't matter past 20" would be a better rule but the rule is tolerably okay compared to most takes on age gap nowadays.
