I think the constant updates that come with a live-service game kind of sucks because every jackoff developer ships a half-baked idea of a game with minimal content, releases it with no server hosting or mod tools, and leaves players on developer life support for content. It's used more of a way to trick players to keep playing their game since before they get bored or realize it's not designed to be a lasting/satisfying game you can come back to years from now, the developers add a new character and turn the balance on its head to keep players distracted.
The reverse situation also happens where a good game with good design gets watered down or changed to the point where it's unrecognizable and you have no way of going back to an older version. More doesn't always equal better.
