It annoys me and rots peoples' general perceptions of the characters, to the point that authorial intent is completely lost.

Maekawa drew from romance from the very beginning. Tangle and Whisper weren't conceptualized that way at all, it's a fandom ship that gained ground and the IDW staff liked it, then they got real pissy that Sega shot it down. Maria is basically embedded into Shadow's character, while Tangle and Whisper were hooked up for brownie points on Twitter.
Shadow and Maria's characters compliment each other, they're designed around each other, their colors were picked with each other in mind. Tangle and Whisper's characters serve to drag each other down and they don't look good together, an ugly mess of tan and grey and brown. Plus I respect Maekawa and I don't respect IDW pedogroomers.
