Yeah, this is another ignorant take. The idea that there's only one kind of alcoholic, and they must constantly have booze coursing through their veins or they shake. The morning drink.
Truth is, you're an alcoholic for a number of reasons, but mainly that you don't react the same way as a non-alcoholic does. Binge drinkers are often alcoholics. If they can't control their drinking they are alcoholic; even if they can go days, weeks, months without drinking. If once they pick it up they can't drink responsibly, they have a problem.
You're describing extreme, end-stage alcoholism. But that's not the only kind by any stretch of the imagination. You can ask any substance abuse counselor. It's common knowledge.
My theory is that people refuse to accept this because in their mind "at least I'm not THAT bad. I don't shake or need morning drinks so I'm not really an alcoholic."
You probably are.
Of course there do exist heavy drinkers, frequent drinkers who love booze but really can stop whenever they want. It's just pretty rare. They usually develop a real dependence eventually.
A lot of denial surrounding drinking.
