By having a genuine vision, executing it to the best of their ability, and hoping other people like their idea as much as they did. Sonic used to be this. The creators were doing things they thought were cool and sharing it with everyone. Now they use Sonic as a vehicle to chase other audiences rather than cultivating their own. It's sad.
