A problem with the so called "esports" is that they ironically stand for more casualized games.
More often than not corporations hijack grassroots scenes for better games and then use said scene to market dumbed down sequels made for the masses. Only very few can resist the temptation of money and play older stuff they think is better.
The old playerbase then only gets the option to participate in that and to shill it or to get replaced by a new batch of faggots.
Thats the sinister part of corporate "esports" too. It technically doesnt matter who is the best in the world. The best players could quit in disgust after a beloved series is raped and there will be others waiting in line to take their spot. Doesnt matter if they are worse.
Fighting games are a prime example of that, but I see this kind of farce play out with fps too.
