>And, oh yeah, why they made an entire feature-length CGI movie in 2002.
Derp, I meant 2001. Based on all this, I have to wonder, if Sprits Within had been a huge success, would Square have shifted entirely toward making movies? Would they have have completely divorced their art department from their game studio and returned to making sensibly-sized, gameplay-focused JRPGs while keeping movies in theaters where they belong? Or would it have just snowballed everything even faster?

Regardless of the outcome, this era was instrumental in cementing the concept of video games as expensive cinematic spectacles. Once other studios saw their success and tried to emulate it, it was all downhill from there.

picrel, followed by XIV 1.0
It's not even because of the products themselves but because of the damage they caused which led to all sorts of terrible decisions.
Also FFX, which could be forgiven for being their first PS2 title, but every mainline afterwards only drifting further away from core FF shouldn't have been accepted, XV is a particularly egregious FUBAR point they should have never been allowed to double down on (with regards to the mainline shift to action).
Not to say I'm not guilty of not realising how bad things really are until recently myself, so I imagine the average person might not even be questioning how far we've strayed from God yet, but I'd be glad to be wrong.
Things are bad but they need to get much worse before the fucks in charge at SE (reminder Kitase doesn't get enough shit) start trying to salvage the franchise. I don't want to say it but honestly FF (mainline, at least) might just be better off having a hopefully decent at least send-off game and retired for other projects where passion still exists.

Bonus: dev times are way too long. Mainline FF up to XI was basically a yearly franchise. Even if that is not feasible today, they really should find a way to slash dev times in half. That could be somewhat fixed if you consider the 7R games to be mainline entries, I just consider 7R an abomination but even if I didn't it still doesn't really replace a mainline.
