It's the same story everywhere.
People with the initial ambition get old or driven out and new people taking up the mantle are working off the prior inspiration that made the things before. But, they don't have the spark that was needed to create it in the first place.
They become derivative, shitty, it happens all the time all over the place. Videogames as a medium have been rehashing the same mechanics and plot points for at least two decades. It's rare for something actually novel to exist in the current market. Too much risk.
I personally place lot of the blame on Ubisoft, but I'm not going to get into that.
