Frankly from the sounds of it, Sakurai was always looking for the easiest way to do things which would explain why most of his IPs only really got good when the team under him got more control and was able to put more things in it. This core philosophy of his is probably why Smash 4 and Smash Ultimate felt so fucking sterile despite being one of the most hyped games when it was advertised and released.
